چکیده

Abstract Purpose of Review Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is the commonest cause epilepsy-related premature mortality people with chronic epilepsy. It most devastating epilepsy outcome. We describe and discuss risk factors possible pathophysiological mechanisms to elucidate preventative strategies avert SUDEP. Recent Findings death accounts for a significant proportion compared general population. Unmodifiable include history neurologic insult, younger age seizure-onset, longer duration, convulsions, symptomatic epilepsy, intellectual disability, non-ambulatory status. Modifiable presence convulsive seizures, increased seizure frequency, timely appropriate use antiseizure medications, polytherapy, alcoholism, supervision while sleeping. Pathophysiology unclear, but several such as direct alteration cardiorespiratory function, pulmonary impairment, electrocerebral shutdown, adenosine dysfunction, genetic susceptibility suggested. Summary Methods prevent SUDEP increasing awareness SUDEP, augmenting knowledge unmodifiable factors, obtaining full remission, addressing lifestyle prone positioning, enacting protocols increase detection intervention Further studies are required characterize precisely comprehensively drivers develop evidence-based algorithms minimize

SUDEP is defined as the sudden, unexpected, witnessed or unwitnessed, non-traumatic, and non-drowning death in patients with epilepsy with or without evidence for a seizure, and excluding documented status epilepticus, in which postmortem examination does not reveal a structural or toxicological cause for death1. Where autopsy is not performed, and for the purpose of epidemiological studies, su...

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy

People with epilepsy have increased risk of premature death, and their life expectancy may reduce by 2-10 yr. Population- and hospital-based studies have shown that the excess mortality in epilepsy is not entirely explained by deaths directly attributable to epilepsy such as accidents and drowning during a seizure. It is also significantly contributed by deaths from other causes such as cardiac...

Mortality in people with epilepsy is two- to three-times that of the general population. This can be attributed to epilepsy itself (epilepsy-related death) or to the underlying cause of the epilepsy. Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the commonest cause of epilepsy-related death. It is a syndrome where a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and no other cause of death is found. There...

The Canadian health care environment represents a unique opportunity to capture data on SUDEP in children; however, it is well recognized that only a small subset of children with epilepsy receive care from a paediatric neurologist. Dr. Jette, a coinvestigator on this project, is currently leading a study examining the health care utilization of 26,000 people with epilepsy in Alberta. Dr. Jette...
